{"id":10250,"date":"2024-01-24T17:53:50","date_gmt":"2024-01-25T00:53:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mattfife.com\/?p=10250"},"modified":"2024-09-21T13:45:32","modified_gmt":"2024-09-21T20:45:32","slug":"international-longshore-and-warehouse-union-files-bankruptcy-for-port-of-portland-violations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mattfife.com\/?p=10250","title":{"rendered":"International Longshore and Warehouse Union files bankruptcy for Port of Portland violations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It looks like the illegal slowdowns by ILWU that ended up destroying the Port of Portland and leaving it&#8217;s own members jobless when shipping companies cut all ties has finally reached a head &#8211; in the bankruptcy of ILWU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bankruptcy of the union was the final result of a decades-old litigation between the union and an affiliate of the International Container Terminal Services Inc. It started as, what a jury later determined, to be illegal tactics when workers for years caused operational disruptions at the Port of Portland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/business\/2019\/11\/jury-awards-936-million-to-former-operator-of-ports-terminal-6-for-losses-due-to-dock-workers-unlawful-labor-practices.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/business\/2019\/11\/jury-awards-936-million-to-former-operator-of-ports-terminal-6-for-losses-due-to-dock-workers-unlawful-labor-practices.html\">After a 10-day trial in late 2019, a jury found ICTSI was entitled to over $93.6 million in damages<\/a> &#8211; an astounding and unheard of record amount. Especially in union-friendly Oregon. While the union challenged the fine and a judge reduced the amount owed by the union to just over $19 million (March 2020), the amount was still too much. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lbbusinessjournal.com\/ports\/ilwu-lawsuit-bankruptcy-long-beach\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/lbbusinessjournal.com\/ports\/ilwu-lawsuit-bankruptcy-long-beach\/\">ILWU filed for bankruptcy<\/a> in Oct 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, the damage was done. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/port-of-portland-loses-last-container-ship-service-1463696432\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/port-of-portland-loses-last-container-ship-service-1463696432\">The Port of Portland went completly dark. May 2016 was when the last container ship left the facility and all dock work was permanently lost.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2023 Update<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/business\/2023\/02\/container-shipping-rebounds-at-port-of-portland-after-infamous-labor-dispute.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/business\/2023\/02\/container-shipping-rebounds-at-port-of-portland-after-infamous-labor-dispute.html\">In 2020, the Port of Portland has again started accepting container ships<\/a> and are back up to just over half it&#8217;s former volume. Lets hope cooler heads have now prevailed and the militant rhetoric ended. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2024 Update:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Port of Portland has succumb to the damage of the illegal ILWU slowdowns. After attempting to restart the port, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/business\/2024\/04\/port-of-portland-to-pull-plug-on-cargo-container-handling-at-terminal-6.html?outputType=amp\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/business\/2024\/04\/port-of-portland-to-pull-plug-on-cargo-container-handling-at-terminal-6.html?outputType=amp\">it announced that it will again close all container operations effective Oct 1, 2024<\/a>.
