But speakers have to propel a volume of air, rather than be pushed by it.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/mems-speakers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">xMEMS speakers<\/a>\u00a0going into products\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/us.creative.com\/aurvanatws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">now<\/a>\u00a0are chips with multiple silicon flaps coated in piezoelectric material that vibrate at audible frequencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MEMS chips specialize in generating audible frequencies with very low phase distortion. Phase distortion is the variation in the timing of an acoustic signal according to its frequency; and has been with us since speakers were created. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Phase inaccuracy is so ubiquitous that we simply accept it&#8230;.
