There were <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/02\/24\/tech-layoffs-2024-list\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/02\/24\/tech-layoffs-2024-list\/\">over 150,000 job cuts across 542 companies in 2022-2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No sector has been <a href=\"https:\/\/mattfife.com\/?p=10727\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/mattfife.com\/?p=10727\">hit harder than game development<\/a>. It is likely true there was far too much growth during the pandemic, but it sure seems like the pendulum has been swinging back the other way with a vengance. Longtime devs are sharing that things are worse than many of them have ever seen and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/gamedev\/comments\/1izsz13\/considering_the_layoffs_across_the_industry_as\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/gamedev\/comments\/1izsz13\/considering_the_layoffs_across_the_industry_as\/\">wages are dropping<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-reddit wp-block-embed-reddit\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" style=\"height:316px\" ><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/gamedev\/comments\/1iwuqlp\/how_do_you_get_over_being_laid_off_by_a_game\/\">How do you get over being laid off by a game studio you loved working at, but have to watch from the sidelines on the continued development of the project?<\/a><br> by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/user\/RespectfulGamer08\/\">u\/RespectfulGamer08<\/a> in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/gamedev\/\">gamedev<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"UTF-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/gamedev\/comments\/1j7vuqg\/is_there_still_hope_for_juniors_in_the_game\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/gamedev\/comments\/1j7vuqg\/is_there_still_hope_for_juniors_in_the_game\/\">worse for juniors or people trying to get into the industry<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Your situation is similar to so many others&#8217;: junior devs can&#8217;t find paying work, their personal projects don&#8217;t make much or any money at all, and they survive by teaching game dev.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So junior game devs who can&#8217;t find paying work are teaching the next wave of junior devs who won&#8217;t be able to find paying work. So what will that new wave do, teach? Every year, I find out about another college or university that teaches game development. The number of students who get game dev degrees keeps increasing, but the number of jobs is not keeping pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s what the cycle looks like right now.
