{"id":165,"date":"2008-01-21T17:44:06","date_gmt":"2008-01-21T21:44:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mattfife.net\/wordpress\/?p=165"},"modified":"2013-07-04T08:11:37","modified_gmt":"2013-07-04T15:11:37","slug":"englightening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mattfife.com\/?p=165","title":{"rendered":"Englightening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is a graph of the &#8216;majority&#8217; faith of each county in the US as of 2000.\u00a0 According to the chart, a &#8216;majority&#8217; religion can claim more than 50% of the county&#8217;s population.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t realize how Catholic most of the country is.\u00a0 I&#8217;m also surprised there aren&#8217;t more gray counties where it&#8217;s split between 3 or nobody has a &#8216;majority&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>I happen to know the Oregon numbers seem strange.\u00a0 The local paper listed Catholics as only 35% of the general population (statewide).\u00a0 Yet it is still the largest denominational church attended in Oregon by a wide margin.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because more than 50% of the population don&#8217;t profess to belong to any denominational faith.\u00a0 Hence\u00a0 I was expect more grey squares.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mattfife.net\/special\/churchbodies.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mattfife.net\/special\/churchbodies.gif?resize=150%2C100\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I think a lot of folks (especially the average person in the pew) do not realize how powerful and how much they can influence things in our country.\u00a0 With voter turnout averaging less than 50% in a good number of elections, 50% of the country isn&#8217;t being represented.\u00a0 So in essence, each person that is voting is getting 2 votes (one for the guy that didn&#8217;t vote).\u00a0 Seen in that light, it&#8217;s no wonder our president and our congress have such amazingly low approval ratings (you did know congress has a lower approval rating than Bush right?)<\/p>\n<p>Are we in a spiral?\u00a0 We&#8217;re dissatisfied with our public leaders so we don&#8217;t think our vote will matter &#8211; so we vote less.\u00a0 This makes our public leaders elected by fewer, more active\/vocal voters who likely do not represent us or our values well.
