I recently upgraded from Photoshop CS5 to Photoshop CC and it has been a great improvement overall. \u00a0However, I still have my old Canoscan LIDE 25 scanner that uses TWAIN. \u00a0If you remember, this involved a bit of tweaking when I went to get it to work with CS5<\/a> \u00a0and CS6<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At any rate, here’s how\u00a0you get your Canon Canoscan LiDE25 (or other TWAIN scanner) working with Photoshop CC on Windows 7:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Install the\u00a0CanoScan LIDE 25 driver. \u00a0You can find that on the Canon download page<\/a> (or download it here locally if they ever stop updating it)<\/li>\n
  2. Adobe does not have TWAIN support installed in Photoshop by default anymore. \u00a0Instead, you must download their Optional Plugin pack<\/a>. \u00a0It’s important to note that you download the CS6 plugin pack for CS6 or CC editions. \u00a0Also note, the TWAIN support only works on the 32-bit version of Photoshop. \u00a0It will NOT work on 64-bit versions of Photoshop.\n

    1. Download the Optional pack<\/li>\n
    2. Close Photoshop<\/li>\n
    3. Install the option pack by copying it\u00a0in the right plugin directory for your 32-bit version of Photoshop (see their website for the right directory)<\/li>\n
    4. Open Photoshop (32-bit version)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
    5. So, you installed the scanner driver and Photoshop is updated. \u00a0I open Photoshop and go to File->Import->Canoscan LiDE25. \u00a0Sadly, I then get this error message: “Could not open the TWAIN source<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Make sure there is a valid source\u00a0<\/span>for your scanner in the TWAIN\u00a0<\/span>Directory<\/span>\u00a0found in the\u00a0<\/span>Window Directory<\/span>.”<\/span><\/strong><\/strong>Hmmm<\/span>, what is going on? \u00a0I try running the CanoScan<\/span> Toolbox and when I copy\/PDF and hit the ‘Copy’ or ‘Scan’ button, I get this error message:<\/span> “Unable to open TWAIN source.\u00a0Please check connection then re-start Toolbox.<\/strong>” <\/span><\/strong>However, if I use a 3rd party tool like <\/span>VueScan<\/span> – it is able to capture scans just fine. \u00a0So I know the scanner is physically working.<\/span><\/li>\n
    6. I found this badly aged\/broken blog entry<\/a>, but it describes the solution:\n
        \n
      1. Go to your c:Windowstwain_32<\/code> directory<\/li>\n
      2. You should see a sub-folder with a number\/letter combination, \u00a0Mine is: C:Windowstwain_32CNQL25<\/code><\/li>\n
      3. Add that to your system path variable\n
          \n
        1. Right-click on Computer -> Properties -> Advanced system settings -> Advanced -> Environment Variables<\/li>\n
        2. In the bottom System variables scroll-box, find the ‘Path’ variable<\/li>\n
        3. Click\u00a0edit and go to the far right of the ‘Variable value:’ field. Enter the directory to the end of the list, separating it from previous entries by a ‘;’. \u00a0Google adding a\u00a0directory to system path in Windows if you need more help.

        4. Save and close the system settings<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n
