{"id":2124,"date":"2015-05-08T17:55:16","date_gmt":"2015-05-09T00:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mattfife.com\/?p=2124"},"modified":"2016-12-17T08:59:12","modified_gmt":"2016-12-17T15:59:12","slug":"canoscan-lide25-photoshop-cc-windows-7-and-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mattfife.com\/?p=2124","title":{"rendered":"Canoscan Lide 25, Photoshop CC, Windows 7, TWAIN, and you!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently upgraded from Photoshop CS5 to Photoshop CC and it has been a great improvement overall. \u00a0However, I still have my old Canoscan LIDE 25 scanner that uses TWAIN. \u00a0If you remember, this involved a bit of tweaking when I went to get it to work with <a href=\"https:\/\/mattfife.com\/?p=452\" target=\"_blank\">CS5<\/a> \u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/mattfife.com\/?p=1918\" target=\"_blank\">CS6<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, here&#8217;s how\u00a0you get your Canon Canoscan LiDE25 (or other TWAIN scanner) working with Photoshop CC on Windows 7:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Install the\u00a0CanoScan LIDE 25 driver. \u00a0You can find that on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usa.canon.com\/cusa\/support\/consumer\/scanners\/canoscan_series\/canoscan_lide25#DriversAndSoftware\" target=\"_blank\">Canon download page<\/a> (or download it here locally if they ever stop updating it)<\/li>\n<li>Adobe does not have TWAIN support installed in Photoshop by default anymore. \u00a0Instead, you must download their <a href=\"https:\/\/helpx.adobe.com\/photoshop\/kb\/twain-plug-photoshop-cs4-cs5.html#id_51241\" target=\"_blank\">Optional Plugin pack<\/a>. \u00a0It&#8217;s important to note that you download the CS6 plugin pack for CS6 or CC editions. \u00a0Also note, the TWAIN support only works on the 32-bit version of Photoshop. \u00a0It will NOT work on 64-bit versions of Photoshop.\n<ol>\n<li>Download the Optional pack<\/li>\n<li>Close Photoshop<\/li>\n<li>Install the option pack by copying it\u00a0in the right plugin directory for your 32-bit version of Photoshop (see their website for the right directory)<\/li>\n<li>Open Photoshop (32-bit version)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>So, you installed the scanner driver and Photoshop is updated. \u00a0I open Photoshop and go to File-&gt;Import-&gt;Canoscan LiDE25. \u00a0Sadly, I then get this error message: &#8220;<strong><strong><span style=\"color: #6a6a6a;\">Could not open the TWAIN source<\/span><span style=\"color: #545454;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #6a6a6a;\">Make sure there is a valid source\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #545454;\">for your scanner in the TWAIN\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #6a6a6a;\">Directory<\/span><span style=\"color: #545454;\">\u00a0found in the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #6a6a6a;\">Window Directory<\/span><span style=\"color: #6a6a6a;\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><span style=\"color: #6a6a6a;\">Hmmm<\/span><span style=\"color: #6a6a6a;\">, what is going on? \u00a0I try running the CanoScan<\/span><span style=\"color: #6a6a6a;\"> Toolbox and when I copy\/PDF and hit the &#8216;Copy&#8217; or &#8216;Scan&#8217; button, I get this error message:<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #6a6a6a;\"> &#8220;<strong>Unable to open TWAIN source.\u00a0Please check connection then re-start Toolbox.<\/strong>&#8221; <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #6a6a6a;\">However, if I use a 3rd party tool like <\/span><span style=\"color: #6a6a6a;\">VueScan<\/span><span style=\"color: #6a6a6a;\"> &#8211; it is able to capture scans just fine. \u00a0So I know the scanner is physically working.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>I found this badly aged\/broken <a href=\"http:\/\/weblogs.asp.net\/jeffwids\/canon-scanner-unable-to-open-twain-source\" target=\"_blank\">blog entry<\/a>, but it describes the solution:\n<ol>\n<li>Go to your <code>c:Windowstwain_32<\/code> directory<\/li>\n<li>You should see a sub-folder with a number\/letter combination, \u00a0Mine is: <code>C:Windowstwain_32CNQL25<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Add that to your system path variable\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click on Computer -&gt; Properties -&gt; Advanced system settings -&gt; Advanced -&gt; Environment Variables<\/li>\n<li>In the bottom System variables scroll-box, find the &#8216;Path&#8217; variable<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0edit and go to the far right of the &#8216;Variable value:&#8217; field.
