{"id":2924,"date":"2017-04-28T10:33:23","date_gmt":"2017-04-28T17:33:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mattfife.com\/?p=2924"},"modified":"2017-05-02T10:37:12","modified_gmt":"2017-05-02T17:37:12","slug":"vnc-ing-into-ubuntu-14-04","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mattfife.com\/?p=2924","title":{"rendered":"VNC-ing into Ubuntu 14.04"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some VNC functionality was broken in Ubuntu 14.04 due to Vino, but fortunately, <a href=\"https:\/\/askubuntu.com\/questions\/463486\/can-no-longer-use-screen-share-to-connect-mac-to-ubuntu-since-upgrading-to-14-04\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">it&#8217;s fixable<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Using a combination of clues from <a href=\"http:\/\/discourse.ubuntu.com\/t\/remote-desktop-sharing-in-ubuntu-14-04\/1640\">http:\/\/discourse.ubuntu.com\/t\/remote-desktop-sharing-in-ubuntu-14-04\/1640<\/a> (which is all about VNC access) and <a href=\"https:\/\/bugs.launchpad.net\/ubuntu\/+source\/vino\/+bug\/1281250\">https:\/\/bugs.launchpad.net\/ubuntu\/+source\/vino\/+bug\/1281250<\/a> (which discusses the bug introduced into Vino) I have managed to resolve the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Essentially you have to disable encryption on remote desktop access in Gnome due to a bug that has come to surface in Vino. However, some threads tell you to uncheck it in the wrong place. Follow these guidelines and you should be able to resolve it quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically it&#8217;s<\/p>\n<p><code>dconf<\/code> <em>&gt; org &gt; gnome &gt; desktop &gt; remote-access &gt; require-encryption &#8211; <strong>uncheck<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h1>and <strong>NOT<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><s><code>dconf<\/code> <em>&gt; desktop &gt; gnome &gt; remote-access &gt; enabled &#8211; <strong>uncheck<\/strong><\/em><\/s><\/p>\n<p>Here is how you do it:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>First make sure <code>Desktop Sharing<\/code> is set up <em>properly<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Download <code>dconf-tools<\/code> by typing in Terminal <code>sudo apt-get install dconf-tools<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Run <code>dconf-Editor<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Expand <code>org<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Expand <code>gnome<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Expand <code>Desktop<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Select <code>Remote Access<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Uncheck <code>Require Encryption<\/code> (don&#8217;t click on Set to Default as it rechecks it)<\/li>\n<li>Exit dconf-Editor<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It should now work.
