{"id":480,"date":"2011-10-26T18:11:36","date_gmt":"2011-10-27T01:11:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mattfife.net\/wordpress\/?p=480"},"modified":"2012-12-18T15:28:43","modified_gmt":"2012-12-18T22:28:43","slug":"when-the-less-obvious-solution-is-best","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mattfife.com\/?p=480","title":{"rendered":"When the less-obvious solution is best"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes more really isn&#8217;t the answer.<\/p>\n<p>Case and point &#8211; dishes at your house. \u00a0I saw this picture and college days of yore flooded back:<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mattfife.net\/special\/sink.jpg?w=300\" onmouseout=\"undefined\" onmouseover=\"undefined\"  title=\"undefined\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At one bachelor flat I lived at &#8211; our sink often looked like this. \u00a0We had 4 guys living in one house, and dishes weren&#8217;t a high-priority item. \u00a0So, they tended to pile up and then nobody seemed to remember who dirtied what and an endless cycle of blame and avoidance resulted.<\/p>\n<p>The solution: throw out all the extra dishes. \u00a0Instead, there was *exactly 1* set of silverware, plate, and glass for each person. \u00a0Further, each one was color-coded. \u00a0Red plate\/cup\/silverware was Bob&#8217;s. \u00a0Green was Fred&#8217;s, etc. \u00a0That meant if you wanted to eat something, then you had to have washed your stuff to do so. \u00a0It also meant if you left your dirty dishes around &#8211; the\u00a0culprit\u00a0was immediately\u00a0identifiable. \u00a0The first benefit was that with only 4 plates in the house, a &#8216;pile&#8217; of them never got very big. \u00a0The second was that very quickly the innocents were vindicated, and slobs were identified. (We still had a full set of &#8216;nice&#8217; dishes for when people came over for a dinner &#8211; but they were in a\u00a0separate\u00a0cupboard. \u00a0Anyone seen using those individually would be berated furiously). \u00a0 The system worked like a charm and there was\u00a0nary\u00a0an argument about dishes for the rest of the time I lived there.<\/p>\n<p>I think this is a\u00a0corollary to many a home-owner&#8217;s observation that\u00a0your possessions naturally expand to fit the space you have. \u00a0 Or maybe Apple&#8217;s design philosophy that sometimes its the limitations you put on the usage of the device that actually allow easier and higher functionality.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes more really isn&#8217;t the answer.
