{"id":493,"date":"2012-02-27T19:16:52","date_gmt":"2012-02-28T02:16:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mattfife.net\/wordpress\/?p=493"},"modified":"2012-08-11T23:30:24","modified_gmt":"2012-08-12T06:30:24","slug":"the-spy-who-loved-me-ian-flemming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mattfife.com\/?p=493","title":{"rendered":"The Spy Who Loved Me &#8211; Ian Flemming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Shesh!\u00a0 Book reviews galore.\u00a0 Looks like I&#8217;ve been having too many boring drives home.\u00a0 Anyway, on to a new book: one of Ian Flemming&#8217;s\u00a0 James Bond stories.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/51RB139GQBL._BO2%2C204%2C203%2C200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click%2CTopRight%2C35%2C-76_AA300_SH20_OU01_.jpg?w=200\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>This one is &#8220;The Spy Who Loved Me&#8221;.\u00a0 It was another short read at 6 discs, or about 5 days of commuting.\u00a0 If you&#8217;ve never had the honor, you should really read one of Ian Flemming&#8217;s Bond books.\u00a0 The first thing you&#8217;ll note is that the movies have just about nothing to do with the stories they are named after.\u00a0 Sure, there is a character named James Bond who is a spy; a damsel in distress, some evil characters, but that&#8217;s where things depart.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, we have the story of a young French Canadian who is working her way across country doing odd jobs as she goes to pay the way.\u00a0 As our story starts, she is working at a vacation motel at the end of it&#8217;s season.\u00a0 On the last night, some unsavory gentlemen appear as does James Bond (by pure chance).\u00a0 Bond&#8217;s debonair manner and gunplay ensue as he and our night clerk try to figure out and foil our villains&#8217; evil plot without getting killed.\u00a0 Being a short book, all the adventure really takes place at this one motel\u00a0 There&#8217;s no evil mastermind plotting to destroy the world or counterespionage intrigue.\u00a0 Just a great little compact story of an adventuresome night spent at a motel.<\/p>\n<p>And for that, it&#8217;s a great little story.\u00a0 Sure, it&#8217;s a bit dated with the girls being called dolls and whatnot, but it&#8217;s still a pretty good story overall.\u00a0 Unlike a number of other Bond books, this one doesn&#8217;t have as much blatant bigotry you&#8217;ll find in some of Fleming&#8217;s other novels.\u00a0 Instead, you get a good little story with some tight action sequences and a good finish.\u00a0 I enjoyed it.<\/p>\n<p>While nothing earth-shattering will happen here, but it&#8217;s still an enjoyable little pulpy adventure.
