The polls have consistently shown Hillary Clinton with a lead over Donald Trump, and yet, Trump just shocked the media, the polls, and the world with his victory. But it wasn’t a shock to some. Especially Genic.AI – a company that specializes in AI’s to solve complex problems. MogIA predicted his win months ago.
Genic.AI wrote a machine learning AI called MogIA that predicted the primaries and the last 4 elections perfectly. MogIA used 20 million data points from online platforms like Google, YouTube, and Twitter to come up with its predictions. It correctly predicted the past three presidential elections as well as the Democratic and Republican primaries. Now it’s 4 for 4.
“While most algorithms suffer from programmers/developer’s biases, MoglA aims at learning from her environment, developing her own rules at the policy layer and develop expert systems without discarding any data,” Sanjiv Rai, the founder of Indian start-up Genic.ai who developed MogIA, told CNBC. In October, Rai declared that Trump’s social media engagement had overtaken that of Barack Obama’s in 2008 by 25%, foreshadowing a Republican victory on November 8th. The predictions are now true.
Consequences.
It is not just that AI’s are doing complex tasks, it’s that they increasingly doing complex evaluative tasks better than the best humans in the whole world. These AI’s can be written by a few (or just one) persons using off-the-shelf compute. This makes it available to almost anyone – at prices far below the price of an average yearly employee salary. – Me 2014
Some are calling this the Truman defeats Dewey moment for our elections. What happens when several, or even one, cheaply made machine AI’s can now predict the results of huge upset elections months in advance better than thousands of people working at polling companies and the most astute political campaign machines like Mrs Clinton’s? Do those old companies and employees have any value anymore?
What would an election look like if we threw out the usual political rulebooks and went fully into AI guided campaigns? How will the face of online companies like Facebook, Twitter, and Google that trade in your postings, opinions, and data shape our elections? How do we protect against their manipulation – such as the case where former Facebook employees admitted to regularly and actively censor conservative news? Or worse, protect against manipulation by domestic/foreign agents that might be able to write counter-AI’s to manipulate postings.
I think we’re very much on the breakthrough moment of AI’s taking over these very kinds of decisions and jobs in our society. I also believe we need to start looking at how to protect ourselves from equally capable AI’s that will attempt to manipulate results (such as we see today with AI bots writing product reviews) and companies that will attempt to skew data.
Some users have reported they noticed occasional flickering or graphical artifacts on multiple brands of the 1070. Right now most of the major vendors are working on (or already issuing) a BIOS firmware update for their graphics cards.
Investigation has shown the issues are graphics memory related. GeForce GTX 1070 cards fitted with Samsung memory do not appear to have any issues but some manufacturers have switched towards Micron chips and these appear to be the culprit. This is noticed most during overclocking the graphics memory subsystem. The problem is in the the speed of the voltage adjustment from the low power idle P-States for memory voltage under load. If you can keep the idle voltage above 0.800V before you apply the overclock, you never see the issue.
A number of manufacturers have been working on VBIOS updates, so be sure to check your vendor:
Timberline Lodge is located outside of Portland way up on nearby Mt Hood. It’s the famous hotel seen in Stanley Kubrick’s THE SHINING as the location of the infamous Overlook hotel.
Just recently, a new group called the ‘Overlook Film Festival’ has popped up. They appear to be the same folks that ran The Stanley Film Festival that used to be held at the Estes Park, CO hotel that Steven King stayed at and inspired him to write THE SHINING. There is scant info on their official site, but April 27-30th, 2017 they are hosting a new ‘festival experience’ at Timberline Lodge.
The brief description indicates there will be film programming with a focus on experiential events, new and classic independent horror cinema, and the latest in interactive and live shows to create a fully immersive weekend. They bill it as ‘A summer camp for genre fans’ and a community event bringing the best of horror in all its forms to an enthusiastic and appreciative audience within an intimate and inspirational environment.
Weekend long Immersive Game, an opt-in real-time mystery starring you, is produced by Bottleneck Immersive
Live programming will include one-of-a-kind musical performances, unique panel presentations, live podcasts, escape room challenges, magic shows, trivia night, games, brunches, an interactive gallery, virtual reality installations and more.
Tickets for just the event are $150-350 and whole weekend packages that ran in the $1300-1600 range were already sold out just a few days after it was announced. After having attended a murder mystery party at the lodge a few years back, I’m very curious about this one too. Just need to figure out if I should shell out the money. 🙂

I recently hosted a night in which my friends and I sat and watched a pile of the over 25 Treehouse of Horror episodes. Since watching them all was impossible, we picked 9 of the best ones.
Here they are:
“TREEHOUSE OF HORROR IV: TERROR AT 5½ FEET,” SEASON 5, EPISODE 5
Bart fights off a demonic little gremlin aka the Twilight Zone episode Nightmare at 20,000ft.
“TREEHOUSE OF HORROR VI: HOMER³,” SEASON 7, EPISODE 6
“TREEHOUSE OF HORROR V: TIME AND PUNISHMENT,” SEASON 6, EPISODE 5
Homer invents a time toaster and is totally unprepared for the consequences of time travel.
“TREEHOUSE OF HORROR VI, NIGHTMARE ON EVERGREEN TERRACE,” SEASON 7, EPISODE 6
This homage to Nightmare on Elm Street sees groundskeeper Willie as Freddy Krueger. Equal parts funny and creepy, plus the Stephen King’s It” twist ending of Spider-Willie is just perfect
“TREEHOUSE OF HORROR III: CLOWN WITHOUT PITY,” SEASON 2, EPISODE 3
Another Twilight Zone homage to the episode Living Doll as a possessed Krusty doll. As far as I’m concerned, this segment was also the pop culture moment that put the term “frogurt” into the lexicon.
“TREEHOUSE OF HORROR XIX: IT’S THE GRAND PUMPKIN, MILHOUSE,” SEASON 20, EPISODE 4
This2008 episode is a clear satire of It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. It also has a fantastic take on Mad Men and an Election Day bit on a malfunctioning touch-screen voting machine that mocked the Florida election.
“TREEHOUSE OF HORROR VII: CITIZEN KANG,” SEASON 8, EPISODE 1
The installment from this particular edition where Kang and Kodos come to earth and impersonate Clinton and Dole in their thwarted effort to take over earth. It was brilliant.
“TREEHOUSE OF HORROR I: THE RAVEN,” SEASON 2, EPISODE 3
Homer gives a rendition of Edgar Allen Poe’s classic tale of terror The Raven. Homer as its protagonist, Marge as his lost Lenore, and Bart as the interloping raven.Narration by James Earl Jones.
“TREEHOUSE OF HORROR V: THE SHINNING,” SEASON 6, EPISODE 5
Simpson’s homage to The Shining. The best of them all IMHO.
CBC perfectly captures TED talk cliches that prevent you from really thinking about what they’re saying.
I recommend watching this short clip to anyone that likes TED talks.
I like TED talks. They are often very informative and expose you to interesting new areas of human endeavor and research. But if you get past the pretty wrapping, sometimes they’re pretty full of themselves. Other times, they aren’t saying anything more than what is already known, one person’s experience, or make unproven assertions in ways that wouldn’t be allowed in academic circles. Sometimes they even assert speculation as probable, or in the worst cases are thinly veiled business plans. That said, there is nothing inherently wrong with any of this.
The thing that is problematic is I have seen perfectly smart people sometimes check their objectivity and critical thought because … well… it’s a TED talk. There seems to be a culture of getting wrapped up in the culture of TED talks and accepting things too easily as fact. It’s a form of egotistical blindness in which one might subconsciously be saying, “I saw it on a TED talk, so that makes me smarter than others.” Or maybe a touch harshly, they get blinded by the showiness and check their thinking caps at the door.
This video does a PERFECT job of capturing all the presentation tropes and verbal cliché’s that stop even smart people from critically thinking about what they’re being presented. Hopefully, it allows you to separate the wrapping from the content.
