git’s git:// protocol fails, but git http:// succeeds

A number of source websites expose their source via the git:// protocol. Unfortunately, the git protocol recently broke on one I used, but the git http:// protocol was working. Instead of changing my fetching scripts, I found a clever url replacement in git using the following command:

git config --global url.https://gitsite.com/.insteadOf git://gitsite.com/

This allows you to change the protocol per URL instead of globally. Exactly what I needed.

Wading calf-deep into what looks like an infinite pool of water, visitors to Tokyo’s Odaiba Minna no YUME-TAIRIKU 2016 festival walk slowly through teamLab‘s latest light mapping installation. A shallow pool of water is completely surrounded by mirrored ceiling and walls. Thousands of computer generated koi fish that are projected around the viewer’s feet. The fish change speeds as they navigate the waters, often crashing into observers and bursting into scattered flowers upon contact.

Serial ports are a thing of yesteryear, but never seem to go away. If you have a USB adapter that exposes serial ports to your favorite Linux branch, knowing how to get to them isn’t intuitive.

puTTY is a great terminal emulator, and you can connect to whichever port is exposed using the following format:

sudo putty /dev/ttyUSB0 -serial -sercfg 115200,8,n,1,N

If it’s on a different port, use /dev/ttyUSB1, etc.

As for cables that expose a serial port via USB, I recommend the Sabrent USB 2.0 to Serial (9-Pin) DB-9 RS-232 Converter Cable using the Prolific Chipset.

Hike Yourself Into Shape: 10 Conditioning Hikes Near Portland

Paul Gerald makes a great list of hikes designed to get you back in shape. I agree with this list whole-heartedly, but they do ramp up in difficulty very quickly. You might want to do some of these hikes (or find one of similar distance/elevation gain) more than once before moving up to the next level of difficulty. Also, hikes like the Elk-King traverse and Table mountain can be technically difficult and have exposure/very real falling dangers. So, definitely do your homework before going.

This is a good list of the hikes in Oregon. Having done a number of these, I agree with many of these. While the Columbia Gorge list does not include the Washington side hikes like Dog Mountain, Hamilton Mountain, or Table Mountain, Coyote Wall, etc, at very least it makes a great starting point for Oregon-side trails.

Note that a number of these hikes are not for beginners or novices. Be sure to google the details before you go.
