James Sanborn created an art piece called Kryptos for the CIA headquarters. It contained a strange grid of metal letters. People have been trying to break his code ever since 1990 when he created it.

Fast forward, and a big chunk of the mystery has been solved by amateur (and professional) cryptographers. This video does a great job explaining how it was broken.
