Yelling FIREBALL! for real
Want to capture the magic of LARPing? The $3 indie game Mage Arena is shooting up the Steam charts. Make a lobby of up to eight players, divide into Wizards and Warlocks, and start yelling “FireBall!”, “Freeze!”, and “Magic Missile!”
The game is voice controlled. You speak your spells – and reviewers say it works really well – which is a nice change of pace from many voice controlled games that often have a…less than perfect voice recognition hit rate.
The mechanics are comical. Fireballs hit like localized nukes or obliterate the caster if they’re land too close. A direct freeze spell hit turns your friend into a hilarious block of ice while you ready a magic missile barrage.
Microsoft Basic for 6502 is free
Microsoft has released the version 1.1 source code of “Microsoft BASIC for 6502 Microprocessor” on GitHub, which means you can freely view the assembly code and download it if you want. [PCWorld]
What’s wild is that the entire source for BASIC is a single 6955 line long 6502 assembly file. Also bonus points for back-dating the checkin so it says it was checked in 48 years ago – long before github was even a glimmer in SVN’s eye.
Tesla about to use Unreal engine?
Tesla’s in-car visualizations for features like Autopilot and Full Self-Driving might be getting an upgrade with a switch to Epic Games’ Unreal Engine. As reported by Not a Tesla App, Tesla hacker greentheonly says they found evidence of the change in Tesla’s 2025.20 firmware for Tesla Model S and Model X cars.
It wouldn’t be surprising as the use of standardized tooling is almost always cheaper than making your own. Article here.

Amazon AWS Graviton4 chips beat AMD and Intel
It’s no secret Apple, Amazon, Google, and other companies are starting to develop their own chips. Once relegated to special purpose uses, they are now becoming more general purpose and now give Intel and AMD something serious to worry about.
Phoronix managed to benchmark the latest Amazon Graviton4 and compare it to rivals from AMD and Intel. The AWS Graviton4 chip offers big generation-to-generation improvements over its predecessor and can even beat AMD’s EPYC ‘Genoa’ and Intel Xeon ‘Sapphire Rapids’ in a variety of benchmarks.

Deeplink is effectively dead
In another round of cancellations, Intel announced that it is no longer offering updates, support, or development for Deep Link technologies. Deep Link has been around since 2020, and allowed for the central processor (CPU) and the Arc graphics processor (GPU) to work together to offer better quality operations. Dynamic Power Share could adjust power requirements between CPU and GPU, and the Stream Assist system that could pull tasks from a dedicated GPU and instead run them through an integrated GPU.
I worked on one of the technologies Deep Link provided, and it’s disappointing to see it end.
